Picador to publish a new book by The Secret Barrister
Picador is pleased to announce it will publish the second book by the bestselling author The Secret Barrister.
The Secret Barrister’s first book was a Sunday Times top-ten bestseller for twenty-four consecutive weeks, and has been at the centre of a much-needed campaign to make improvements to our criminal justice system, which saw a copy given to every MP – it’s now been cited in parliament, so it seems some of them even read it!
Having tackled the problems of the criminal justice system, the Secret Barrister will return in an as yet untitled new book (to be published in spring 2020) to reveal the stupidity, malice and incompetence behind many of the biggest legal stories of recent years. They will probe headline-grabbing favourites, asking questions such as: Did the courts really order the death of an innocent baby? Was there an illegal immigrant who couldn't be deported because he had a pet cat? Are unelected judges truly enemies of the people?
The Secret Barrister will not only show readers that the law touches every area of their lives, from intimate family matters to the biggest issues in our society, but that our unfamiliarity is dangerous because it makes us vulnerable to media spin, political lies and the kind of misinformation that frequently comes from other loud-mouthed amateurs and those with vested interests. In their new book, the Secret Barrister will cross-examine the evidence to build a hilarious, alarming and eye-opening defence against the abuse of our law, our rights and our democracy.
Editor Kris Doyle said: ‘Too many of us think the law is just for criminals, but there’s terrifying legal stuff going on every single day that has a direct impact on your life, as the Secret Barrister will show you. Imagine the wit, incision and no-nonsense approach of The Establishment by Owen Jones crossed with Bad Science by Ben Goldacre applied to the law and you’ll have a good idea of what’s to come. I can’t wait!’
The Secret Barrister said: ‘I’m thrilled and frankly staggered at hitting 100,000 copies through all formats, and am hugely grateful to all those who have bought the book and supported its message. I’m relishing the prospect of a further opportunity to shine a little light on our justice system and give a few well-earned jabs to those who would do it harm.’
